LINEAL | Catalina De la Cruz

LINEAL is a photochemical book part of the LIBROS DESIERTOS series by Chilean artist Catalina De la Cruz. The series consists of six photochemical artist’s books proposed as six approaches through the deserts of Chile and Peru. They are borderline spaces of resistance, where structures, traces, nature and cultures survive, addressing chromatic, graphic, architectural, spatial and referential problems of landscape. Each book synthesizes in a different way the idea of landscape in transit and images that escape. It is based on the idea that landscape does not exist as a descriptive and immobile postcard, but rather is constructed from different fragmented, ethereal, mobile, ephemeral, dazed and blurred images that are joined together to form a unique and new experience.

LIBROS DESIERTOS are part of the exhibition EL REVERSO DEL PAISAJE, presented at the Center for Book Arts in New York in 2019.

About EL REVERSO DEL PAISAJE

About EL REVERSO DEL PAISAJE

EL REVERSO DEL PAISAJE is a proposal of artistic appropriation of the American territory. Through images of different spaces, put in dialogue in a series of chemical photographs and photochemical artist’s books, it articulates visual relationships to propose an idea of landscape as a mobile and relational construct, irreducible to a meaning. The exhibition experiments, indicates, surrounds, observes, explores, infers, on elements found in a landscape-experience. In order to construct new imaginaries, it crosses the social, cultural and visual aspects of the territory, with the light, the reference and the matter of the photographic image, and its displacement to the artist’s book.

The material production of these works has been made in bichromate gum, a 19th century photochemical technique that incorporates color pigments in its photosensitive solution. It is a production system that allows a material manipulation of the image in its tone, thickness, density and saturation.

EL REVERSO DEL PAISAJE puts in dialogue two series of works: SILENCIO: 50 photochemical images of 25 x 35 cm, and LIBROS DESIERTOS: 5 photochemical artist’s books, 28 x 32 cm, open. In addition, the reproduction of the biographical mini-documentary made by the Chilean audiovisual collective Rectángulo en el Ojo is also contemplated.
