This publication, based on the work of Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers, is part of our personal collection and has been specially selected for the February newsletter. Here are some facts about this book.
- The real name of the work is Une Seconde d’Eternité d’après une idée de Charles Baudelaire.
- Broodthaers’ work is actually a film on 35 mm tape with a duration of one second. The video contains 24 black and white frames on which the artist progressively writes his initials, MB, as a signature. Hence La Signature is an alternative name for the work.
- Broodthaers commented on the work: “I really enjoyed making it, because this graphism that only lasts a second constitutes at the same time a fiction film. It seems to me that the author’s own signature, whether it is that of an artist, a filmmaker or a poet, it matters little, it is the beginning of a system of lies that all poets, all artists try to establish to defend themselves, I don’t quite know against what”.
- This flipbook is a translation into space of the video book, published by Fridericianum and Département des Aigles for the 2015 retrospective exhibition at the German museum.
